<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - This Patagonia backpack isn’t just for show, instead, it lets everyone who walks behind me know that I work in one of the most accomplished companies in the west coast. My company has the money to hire baristas to make freshly brewed coffee in the morning; feed me catered lunch each day of the week, load the kitchen with unlimited brand name snacks and locally made beer, provide me all the latest hardware from Apple but most importantly, convey that my company can easily spend on brand name gear to hand out for the cost of free ninety-nine.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - So instead of playing into the typical Bay Area lifestyle, I decided it was best to reinvest my time into other meaningful areas of my life. From trying to fit in with the bros in the office who talk (and only talk) about tech, attending work conventions to listen to industry experts flaunt their opinions on the latest trends, being pitched by founders to ‘get ahead’ through ‘mentorship opportunities’ (a.k.a MLM schemes), it was best for me to put those qualities behind me as I pursue more personal creative endeavors. Although it initially felt good to be part of a community that was so highly popularized since my youth, there was this lingering feeling that something did not feel right. Rather than flocking with a fraternity of tech bros that don the same Dockers khakis and Patagonia Better Sweaters, only touching grass when they’re on their 15 minute walk around the parking lot, I’d rather take a hike elsewhere and explore different cultures outside the confines of tech.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - I wanted to create something around this topic for a few reasons: I worked in the tech sector for a few companies and experienced how serious (yet silly) a sweater or backpack with a company logo emblazoned on it can affect people in different ways. Additionally, I did a small photoshoot, posing my friends in sweaters other than the typical “Bay Area” sweater that I would love to share here.</image:title>
<image:caption>To make things simple, I will mainly focus on Patagonia throughout this blog post. While Patagonia is an internationally recognized brand that is loved by many, it is a brand that carries a different meaning within the tech space - portraying the vanity worn by the people who work in this industry.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - For clarity’s sake, I will briefly touch on the subject of ‘value’ within this setting. I think of ‘value’ as how much something is worth - which can be subjective depending on the person. To build a better sense of the term, I’d like to consider the following sub characteristics of intrinsic and extrinsic value. Intrinsic value is how much an object is worth to an individual plus the perceived value of others. Extrinsic value, on the other hand, is value solely based on something else. Let’s take Mr. Tech Bro who was hunting for the Bay Area sweater as an example. Intrinsically speaking, a sweater in itself is designed to keep someone warm. In this case, Sir Silicon Valley Software Engineer Extraordinar wants the garment to exude the feeling of, “Yeah, I work in tech”, which is singularly extrinsic value derived from a shared culture of status norms within the tech sector.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - The typical bay area sweater does not mean it is only referencing the Better Sweater by Patagonia. Instead, the bay area sweater represents the vanity that is born from a culture perpetuated within Bay Area tech companies, each one boasting (regardless of product) of their superiority within their space. Each tech company I worked for used the same template: they fed their shareholder focused company values to me and dressed me up in their corporate branded apparel in an effort to make me feel elevated above similar companies. Even though I did not exclusively ‘buy in’ to all of the values abruptly placed upon me, I eventually found myself acting the same way as the guys to the left and the right of my electronic stand up desk as I subconsciously became a product of my environment.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - It is not that tech culture solely intended for Patagonia to be considered the typical Bay Area sweater, but through mass distribution and circulation of its gear (along with gear from other lifestyle brands) within these tech circles, this widely recognized brand eventually became to be regarded as a special status symbol within the Bay Area. Through Patagonia’s own actions it has, and continues to enable, a feedback loop where they contribute to the values and lifestyle normally found within tech culture.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - While I worked in retail over the holiday season, there were plenty of shoppers gearing up for colder weather. Occasionally, the typical tech bro is found cruising around the store while wearing (you guessed it) their tried and true Patagonia sweater with their company logo on the garment. Although I thought I left all the bros back at the office, I find it funny how I cannot escape them as they come back asking where to buy a sweater they already have. Thankfully, by working in tech, I became more aware of the frivolous values and the grim realities of a lifestyle particular to the Bay Area tech culture. The prestige of working at a tech company in the Silicon Valley, the opportunities for high earning potential, the lingering threat of mass layoffs, the stress of keeping a job & housing security are some of the values that we see daily to the point where they become normalized. A Nano Puff Jacket and a Better Sweater by Patagonia, are simply pieces of outerwear that have adopted a meaning beyond its intended use - reflecting on the values of the culture it became so popular in without even trying. As much as we feel good while wearing Patagonia jackets and sweaters, these outdoor brands who negotiate deals with tech companies can feel good when they can line their fuzzy pockets with continued business.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - I’m glad the Bay Area is home to many cultures coming together to create this diverse community. Nonetheless, tech culture will continue to remain a prominent subculture as companies, people and lifestyle brands feed back into its longevity. While tech companies will do whatever they can to increase their brand recognition, from lining the freeways with cheesy tech jokes posted on giant billboards and sending their legion of recruiters to scour the internet for the next big catch, ultimately they cannot make value judgments on our behalf. Simply put, values brought upon us from an outside entity or culture need to first align with our personal values if there is to be a meaningful relationship between any two parties. In the case that a company’s values begin to outweigh our own, it causes us to lose our sense of self, perpetuating the feedback loop towards vanity and away from self-identity. Even though corporate tactics can influence our decision making process at the end of the day, whatever cultural influences may come our way, it is always important to reflect on our own l principles, in the pursuit of achieving personal happiness and wellbeing.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Show Me The Typical Bay Area Sweater: An Observation Of The Values Associated With Bay Area Tech Culture - Although this blog serves as a glimpse into Bay Area culture, I hope you walk away with a better sense of how extrinsic influences impact our personal values, and hopefully, a positive reminder to blaze your own trails!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - El Cortijo, @cortijovt - On the last day of our trip before hitting the airport, we had brunch at this Mexican restaurant located on the northern end of downtown Burlington. Although I wouldn’t necessarily think Vermont would be known for its Mexican food, this restaurant exceeded my expectations with their Huevos Rancheros. The dish itself was pretty good, but where I think the star of the show is their potatoes. The crispy edges and well seasoned skin, combined with a chunky yet firm interior was just an absolute treat. If you order anything from here, you need to order a side of the potatoes!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Idletyme Brewing Company, @idletymebrewing - The food was pretty good, I got a burger from here that included some jalapeno sauce and two thick cuts of crispy bacon. Although this place was short staffed at the time, they provide Vermont guides to help you plan out your next move while you wait. There’s seating in the back and in the building itself, but the wait to sit outside was much longer compared to inside.</image:title>
<image:caption>*Tip - While you’re waiting for your food, check out their selection of free maps and brochures of the local area, located in the waiting area at the front of the restaurant. Remember, brochures and maps can be just as powerful, if not better, than trying to search for things to do through Google.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Prohibition Pig, @prohibitionpig - Pro Pig, as the locals would call it, is a great place to eat as they have some of the best smoked meats in town. This place is set up with a restaurant in the front that serves their full service menu with a taphouse located right behind it, serving a limited menu. Since the restaurant is so popular with a small interior, wait times can be long, unless you opt for seats at the bar or at the taphouse. From the menu I’d highly recommend the brisket, nachos with pulled pork, hot sausage, and pork ribs. Each smoked plate (with the exception of the nachos) came with a couple pieces of bread and pickled vegetables too.</image:title>
<image:caption>If you can’t get enough of Pro-Pig after pigging out at the restaurant, you can always order some beer to go or pick up any apparel and accessories from their taphouse in the back.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - The shortest, yet challenging trail to the top, is The Chin trail which is an out and back type trail. One way took Oliver and I about 30 minutes to complete, but keep in mind that it’s a tough trail for a couple reasons. The trail is a very narrow ascent until you reach the clearing at the top which opens up the trail tremendously and allows for more two way access. On top of narrow corridors, the already limited space can be more uncomfortable as hikers who are coming back down from the top need space to slip through. In the first half of the hike, it can be difficult to catch a breath as there aren’t places that level out. There are sections in the first half of the trail that will force you to scramble and prompt you to use your hands to traverse uneven terrain. The rocks leading to the clearing are some of the tougher rocks to traverse as they are very smooth and slippery with minimal footholds. After clearing the smooth, steep rocks, the trail mellows out substantially and opens up. Compared to the first half of the ascension, which will naturally protect you from the sun’s rays thanks to the trees, rocks and the mountain face; the second half is all open which leaves you completely exposed to the sun. Compared to Camel’s Hump, Mt. Mansfield is so much more accessible so expect to see more foot traffic on both the trails and at the summit.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - There’s multiple ways to make it to the summit; either by hiking up via an accessible trail at the base of the mountain or by taking the gondola up and then hiking up from the Cliff House. If you do plan to take the Gondola Skyride you’ll stop at the Cliff House restaurant. At the time we went, it was $37 per person including other applicable fees. There’s options to order a ticket at the ticket booth or order online (which we did and was pretty easy). Before getting onto the gondola, we were asked if we had any drones within our camera bags - the employees were pretty adamant on asking, but they didn’t check our bags at the time we went (however, they may check if necessary).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Take a trip around Stowe by taking the Edison Hill and West Hill loop - Although this route is a small loop around Stowe, it’s a great option if you’re looking to get away from the crowds and take some cool car or portrait pictures under the fall leaves. Keep in mind the open spaces along this route are often private property, so if you’re going to take a picture then be mindful of the locals and their driveways.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Spend an afternoon in Lake Elmore - I suggest visiting Lake Elmore for a couple of reasons. It’s a lowkey spot that doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic, so it's a great chance to get away from the crowds. There's the Elmore Sugarhouse located on the southern end of the lake where you can score some maple syrup straight from the source. There are docks located around the lake where you can launch a kayak or sup board from. For you and your camera, there’s photo opportunities abound! Whether it’s flying a drone over the lake, taking shots of a car driving down a road lined with trees dyed in fall colors, or setting up for reflection shots on the lake, Lake Elmore is your playground.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Spend an afternoon in downtown Stowe - There’s a lot to see and do within Stowe, but it can be a battle to find parking in the afternoon. There’s lots of traffic on Mountain Road Marketplace due to a combination of stop signs, no stop lights, and motorists fighting to merge onto the main road. Two places I’d recommend to check out include the Ski and Snowboard Museum, at the time showcasimg Scott Lenhardt’s designs for Burton Snowboards, and the Bear Pond Book Store where you can find photobooks specifically of Vermont.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Take a walk around Little River State Park - The reason why I added this location was because it’s a fantastic place to fly a drone. Located by Waterbury, it’s a 40 minute drive away from Burlington. You will need to take a narrow back road leading up to the park, and it can be a slow drive if there’s a truck in front of you. If you have a drone, I suggest bringing it to the park entrance and fly over the Waterbury Reserve during sundown to get those nice red tones bouncing off the trees. At the time we went, we didn’t notice any signs saying you can’t fly drones within the park or outside of the gates. The entrance fee is $5 per person so it’s a pretty low cost activity to tack on any itinerary. There’s kayaks located on the beaches lying around and are available to rent if you do decide to cruise on the water.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Spend a day at Shelburne Farms, @shelburnefarms - There’s a lot to see and do at Shelburne farms - so much that you can spend a whole day here if you’d like. From taking short walks through the forests, to petting farm animals, getting lost in a maze or viewing some flowers in their garden, there is something for everyone. We stayed for a couple of hours, but during our time we ended up hiking up to Lone Tree Hill, which is a single apple tree on a hill, and explored their maze located in the heart of the establishment. Pictures are allowed, however drone flight is prohibited since this place is private property.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - There aren’t many travelers heading to Little River State Park as this place is primarily designated for camping and secluded in the woods by Waterbury. This combination makes it one of the perfect places to take your time composing car photos (or portraits) undisturbed. We found this clearing in the woods HERE and spent the rest of our afternoon taking photos until the sun went down. When taking car photos, take the shot from a lower angle for a more “striking” pose while accentuating how tall the trees are in the background. *Tip - editing white cars can be tricky. If you find hints of green or yellow within the white of the car, be aware the light bouncing off the colorful leaves will reflect on the car itself. In post processing software like Adobe Lightroom, you will need to use a filter like “select subject” to mask the car. You can apply increasing the whites, and increasing the exposure, and desaturating the car to revert to a whiter color. Finally, decrease the blacks and add contrast using the sliders to help add definition and make your subject stand out.</image:title>

The dock within the picture on the left is situated by the Elmore Store. Bring a 70-200mm lens as there’s plenty of opportunities for reflection shots of homes along the lake. Plus the beauty of a 70-200mm lens helps bring the background to the foreground because of how a higher focal length “compresses” the frame.</image:title>

Since there’s not many cars passing in and out of the road due to how secluded the location is, you can take your time finding the right shot of your friend walking down the beaten path. *Tip - roads in the shape of a s-curve make for a really interesting composition and guides the viewers eyes on what you want them to focus on. <image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - As you drive along the back roads leading to Nebraska Knoll Sugar Farm, there’s plenty of opportunities to take stellar car pictures on Fall Brooks Lane. Like I mentioned earlier, there’s not a lot of visitors coming to the sugar farm since this place is so far out of the way - making it the perfect place to take your time positioning the car. You would want to bring a buddy along to manage the positioning of the car while composing your shot.</image:title>
<image:caption>*Tip - The back roads are perfect for taking portraits or shots of your car! <image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Experience Fall In Vermont - Visiting Vermont in the fall vastly exceeded my expectations and I’m so happy to have experienced such a beautiful place dyed in an abundance of red, orange, and yellow hues. Although California offers yellow aspen trees and pockets of fall colors scattered throughout the state, fall in California cannot compare to fall in the the Northeast. As a photographer and a travel enthusiast, there’s so much to do and enjoy in this state. Even though I’ve only scratched the tip of the iceberg with this one trip, the first experience is more than enough to bring me back here later in my life. I hope you found my tips and suggestions helpful and enjoyed reading through this blog as much as I enjoyed making it. <image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Waterproof Boots And Wool Socks: As for footwear I would bring wool socks and a great pair of hiking shoes. Keep the cotton socks at home and invest in wool socks as this kind of material is better at regulating foot temperatures while reducing the chance of blisters. My preference for wool socks are from Smartwool. They have a great selection of styles and cuts to choose from. What I find great about Smartwool too is how they have a wide range of apparel and accessories as well. When it comes to my shoes, I prefer a higher cut with my boot. The Danner Panorama Mid Waterproof is my go to hiking shoe since they’re waterproof, lightweight and cushiony, and hold up well on rocky terrain.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Hiking Poles: To tell the truth, I didn’t believe in hiking poles until I went on this trip. When my cousin brought them along, I initially thought, “why not just use a wooden stick I can find in the forest instead of spending money on a pole?” I’ll admit, the TrailBuddy Trekking Poles are some of the best pieces of equipment I used. I find trekking poles to be useful in situations like: Distributing your weight when climbing or descending. They help alleviate strain on the knees and grant more stability. Probing the ground to find a stable surface to step on. In the case where I was descending down trails with deep drops, poking around with the stick first helped me ensure the ground was stable without risk of the earth underfoot giving way. While yes any stick found in the woods can help with hiking, not all sticks are made equally. Wooden sticks aren’t meant to be durable, flexible, or light. The technology for poles nowadays is becoming lighter, sturdier, and more compact. My recommendations for hiking poles include the TrailBuddy, Leki, and Black Diamond.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Although we couldn’t get the shots we wanted, we continued on the road and headed to Louise Lake. The drive itself wasn’t too bad, a simple 5 minute drive from Reflection Lake. Don’t worry about finding parking since there’s plenty of shoulder space along the side of the road just outside Louise Lake. After following the beaten path to the lake, you’ll be greeted with a giant opening and blue waters. Out of all the lakes I visited on this trip, Louise Lake was one of my most favorite lakes as it doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic and the waters are cool enough to take a comfortable dip in. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can bring a SUP board on the lake as well.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - To round off our day hiked at Bench and Snow Lake. The Bench and Snow Lake Trail is an out and back style trail which means you will go back the same way you came in. It’s one of the less strenuous trails compared to everything else in the park. However, There’s plenty of steep drops, unstable foot holds, and tree roots littering the path. If you have trekking poles on hand, I’d say this is one of the best trails to use it on to help find your footing. Although the path isn’t terribly rocky either, you can expect to kick up a lot of dust as you hike through. Luckily, we didn’t have any issues with insects along the way or major encounters with wildlife along the way. Once you reach the end of the road and hit Snow Lake, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise as there’s small snakes and tadpoles lurking alongside the water’s edge.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - *photo tip: it was pretty hazy at the time we went. The haze provided a great orangey glow to the scene, so I knew that was something I wanted to enhance within my photos. In post editing, I used radial and linear gradients in combination with increasing the whites, increasing the temperature, adding more haze, and reducing the clarity to further enhance the natural haze.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Leave early and spend the morning to early afternoon exploring Skyline Ridge Trail. We started our hike at 6:30am and ended our hike at 1:30pm. I’d suggest going clockwise instead of going counter clockwise because you’ll get a much better view of Mt. Rainier all the way through until you pass Panorama Point and circle back to the visitor center. The other reason why I suggest the clockwise start is because there’s more opportunities to encounter wildlife like deer, marmots, chipmunks, and sooty grouse. My best tip when starting out really early is to keep your voices down so as not to alarm wildlife. Keep in mind the deer aren’t out as much during the day once more people start hiking the trail. However, since we left early we had a chance to catch some deer grazing on the pastures just 15 minutes into our hike.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Like with the deer, the animals I’ve listed so far are pretty docile in nature and don’t tend to approach people. The chipmunks on the other hand are more interactive and will approach you whether you have food or not. The marmots are easy to approach as they tend to keep to themselves while they feed and rest on rocks. However, don’t get too close as they will scurry off and hide away in any nearby burrow. With the female and male sooty grouse we encountered, they weren’t aggressive even though we crossed paths. As a general tip, just let the wildlife pass by and all is good.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - *photo tip: pack and start with a 70-200mm lens at Skyline Loop Trail. At the time I started, I had the 24-70mm on my camera but instantly regretted it as I didn’t have the reach to take a shot of the deer. A longer reach with the 70-200mm will provide you more than enough reach to capture shots of wildlife from afar. To ensure you have your camera on you at all times without carrying it in your hand, use a capture clip, like one from Peak Design.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Throughout the trail leading up and to Panorama Point, you can expect a mix of different environments from steep inclines, rocky and unstable paths with deep drops, to clear outings with wildflowers populating green meadows. My highest recommendation after reaching Panorama Point Overlook is to follow the trail to McClure Rock. The hardest part about getting to McClure Rock is the path leading up to it is not well defined and you need to blaze your own trail. Trekking poles are very useful in this portion of the hike as there’s plenty of loose, small sharp rock slabs that can give way if stepped on.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - First Time Visitor Guide To Mt. Rainier National Park - Upon entering the Tipsoo Lake area around 6am, I found it hard to believe that a place like this can be found in Washington. The morning fog hovering above us blocked out the sun rays and engulfed everything as it continued its descent over the still waters of the lake. With little to no visitors at 6am, the area is quiet without a sound to be made, not even the presence of wildlife could be traced in these deep green saturated woods. The absence of ripples within the deep murky waters hinted at the idea that life under the surface has yet to emerge.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Boston Burger Company Instagram: bostonburger_co Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>At the time I compiled my food list I had a strong craving for burgers (a trend you’ll notice with some of the restaurants as you continue to read this guide). Out of all the burger places I visited in Boston, the one restaurant that reigns supreme in terms of sheer quantity of burger choices and creativity has to be Boston Burger Company. With four storefront locations, I ended up visiting the one in Cambridge after spending time at the Harvard Museum of Natural History (if you’re visiting museums in Boston, then add this one to your list). At first glance at the menu, I noticed they pack their burgers with so many ingredients. Even though there’s so many options to choose from, no two burgers are going to be the same - something I appreciate as each burger retains its own sense of originality. I ended up ordering “The Roots Burger” because I was craving for something with a little kick to it. Pictures, whether it's the one you see to your right or even the ones you see on the internet about this place, don’t accurately depict the sheer size and amount of food stuffed between two buns. As packed as they make their burgers, I appreciate how the flavors from each individual ingredient still shine through. The individual flavors blend together nicely to provide a consistent taste throughout without taking your taste buds to unexpected twists or turns while savoring the flavor. My big recommendation, if you’re going to eat here, then bring an appetite. One burger (let alone a milkshake) will help you reach that 2,000 calorie daily limit easily.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Hojoko Instagram: hojokoboston Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>Hojoko is a hidden gem located just 5 minutes away by walking from Fenway park. Before hitting a Red Sox game with my brother, we had to make a visit to this izakaya for one reason - the wagyu burger. If you’re not familiar with an izakaya style, it’s a type of restaurant where the serving sizes are small but just enough for one person. Usually the small dishes are accompanied with alcoholic beverages. Although this restaurant is attached to The Verb hotel, the ambiance inside the restaurant is pretty laid back. The neon signs and string lights, along with old school toys lining up the shelves that decorate the interiors give off a night time, retro feel. When it comes to the drinks, there’s no shortage of alcoholic beverages to choose from as they serve a long list of sake options in addition to cocktails with Japanese spirits mixed in. As for the food, although portions are small it’s a great chance to try out different things. I’d say this type of environment is a great place to bring a friend along to sample a wide array of dishes. From the items we ordered, my favorite dish has to be the wagyu burger. The tender, juicy burger nestled between two soft buns simply melts in the mouth. Along with the crisp, thin cut fries helps balance out the meal which provides two opposite, yet complementary textures to the palette. The drawback of this burger was how the size is just a tad bigger than an adult sized fist. From the rest of what my brother and I sampled at the time, I highly recommend getting the shrimp toast and the truffle okonomiyaki. The shrimp toast is crisp, light, and doesn’t skip out on the shrimp. There’s a tinge of sweetness to this dish since it’s also topped with mayo which leads to a smooth creamy finish as well. The truffle okonomiyaki was packed with a lot of corn which made it nice and fibrous. The great part about this dish is how they don’t skip out on the truffle - each bite packing a punch with flavor. Whether you’re in the neighborhood catching a game or looking for some stellar Japanese food in South Boston, then you have to add Hojoko as a stop.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Legal Sea Foods Instagram: legalseafoods Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>Another chain restaurant, I’d say Legal Sea Foods is a great place to check out. At the time I went to this restaurant, it was difficult to choose what I wanted to eat since I had already dined at a few seafood places from my list beforehand. I was almost tempted to order a beef burger to change things up a bit until I settled on the New England crab roll. No regrets were made as I can describe the crab roll as otherworldly awesome. For a footlong roll they pack the sandwich with plenty of crab which is a definite plus. Unexpectedly so, I feel what truly made this roll shine was the bread itself. Crisp edges and a super soft interior, the inside of the roll is cushiony and melts in your mouth while the butter spreads across your tongue. My only reservation with the dish is that the fries accompanying the roll were on the softer side. Nonetheless, if I had to cast my vote for best crab roll in North End, it would undoubtedly give it to Legal Sea Foods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Little Donkey is located on the Cambridge side of the Charles river just 10 minutes away by walking from MIT. The food menu is small and be aware that dishes are served in a tapas style. Even though serving sizes are small as well, it’s similar to Hojoko where it’s a great place to bring a friend along and share an assortment of plates. The reason why we picked this place even though the restaurant is far from our hotel accommodation is because (surprise, surprise!) their signature Little Donkey burger. As the name would suggest, the Little Donkey burger is little, almost to the size of an adult sized fist. Yet small in stature, it still packs plenty of flavor as the jalapeno chips and the caramelized onions give it a nice tanginess. From the other dishes we tried, my favorite dish from the menu has to be the Bangkok noodles. The noodles itself had different flavor personalities that blended in with each other, without any of the accompanying flavors competing for attention. The tamed nuttiness of the peanuts, the oiliness of the noodles, and the abundance of pork combine nicely into a melody of flavor. I’d say it’s not my first recommendation on my list and it’s a ways away from North Boston. Nonetheless, it’s worth checking out if you’re in the area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s hard to walk around North End Boston without seeing someone carrying a white and blue box with a white knot on top. A staple in the heart of Little Italy, if you’ve got a sweet tooth then Mike’s Pastry is a must to visit. Keep in mind this place is cash only, but nothing to fret over too much as there’s plenty of ATMs within the surrounding neighborhood. The best times to go are the mornings and afternoons where there aren’t any lines. It’s during the evenings once everyone is off work and dining out are when lines can be out the door. Ordering is pretty straight forward, simply pick and choose what you’d like from the wide assortment of sweets behind glass counters. The kinds of sweets you can expect here include Italian style cookies, donuts, cakes, and their cornerstone product, the holy cannoli. The biggest upside about visiting Mike’s Pastry in person is they serve over 20 different types of cannolis! From what I sampled, I highly recommend the oreo, amaretto, espresso and the mint chip cannolis. Where I feel a drawback of Mike’s Pastry is even though they have an online store and they can ship nationwide, the online selection is very limited. No matter where you are in Boston, the popularity and significance of Mike’s Pastry can be found everywhere. From the Italian streets to the local airports, Mike’s Pastry is the place to know and the place to be.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oysters for breakfast anyone? That’s exactly what my brother and I did! Neptune Oyster is a well known restaurant tucked away in Little Italy, known for (and you could probably guess by its name) oysters! Although it’s a small establishment with only one location, people start lining up before the doors open. Although Neptune Oyster sources oysters from different regions of the country, I suggest trying their assortment of locally sourced oysters instead along with the Neptune Johnnycake. The Massachusetts sourced oysters range in terms of consistency and flavor - some oysters being big and briny to some being small yet sweet and buttery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts</image:title>
<image:caption>The Neptune Johnnycake is a must try and my most favorite item from what we ordered. Just think of a pancake packed with bits of bluefish distributed evenly throughout and drizzled in a sweet syrup. The best part about the johnnycake is how the honey butter isn’t overpowering which blends very well with the rest of the flavor palette. In addition to the oysters and the Johnnycake, I also ordered the Acadian redfish and chips. The breading on the fish is on the lighter side and not too crispy - helping the fish’s flavor to shine through more. As great as the food tastes served by friendly staff, there’s only two drawbacks I can point out here: floor space is limited so you will be bumping elbows to elbows with other diners and wait times can be long if you’re not the first batch of customers to enter the restaurant. Other than those two points, the culture here is solid and a definite must try if you’re looking to eat from a great selection of oysters.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A simple, little American style restaurant located on the outskirts of North End Boston and just a couple streets down from the Paul Revere House. Something that stood out to me when I walked in was how “homey” the environment felt. The staff are pretty friendly and frequently checked in with me during the course of my dining experience. On top of friendly staff who make you feel at home, when it came to the food, the complimentary banana bread and the home fries knocked my socks off! The banana bread is chewy with loads of banana flavor and hints of nuttiness. The home fries that came along with the fig and prosciutto eggs benedict are some of the best potatoes I’ve had in Boston. Although the skins aren’t crispy (which is normally how I like my home fries to be), each bite bursts with pepper yet mellows out to a smooth finish thanks to the natural subtle flavor of the potatoes. It’s pretty clear to me why this place was so highly rated throughout the years and received numerous accolades. If you’re in the mood for a solid American joint, North Street Grille may be right up your alley.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Located in the Omni Parker House, the Last Hurrah is a small and relaxed bar serving up cocktails and other small bites. Although this location wasn’t included within the list, I’ve added this place on the list for one reason: their Boston cream pie. The night before our flight back home, my brother pointed out how this place has a pretty exceptional cream pie - oh boy was he right. Spongy, nutty, chocolatey, and oh so creamy in the middle, if it’s a cream pie you need to eat before leaving Boston, then the cream pie has to be from The Last Hurrah.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - The Paramount Instagram: @paramountbeaconhill Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the first few restaurants I put on my list for “burger places to eat in Boston”, I’d say The Paramount has a very simple yet solid cheeseburger. It was during my research that “The Paramount” consistently popped up as a search result. To test out the claims about their Paramount Burger, I made it a mission to come here. Located just a block away from the Boston Public Garden, it’s a pretty spacious place with options to sit either inside or outside in their designated patio section. For the star of the show, the Paramount Burger certainly lives up to its name. Although it’s not excessive compared to something from the kitchen of Boston Burger Company, where I feel the Paramount burger shines is how the juiciness of the beef patty and the toastiness of the buns harmonize. In savoring each bite of this medium rare creation, I can share from first hand experience the juices of the beef patty is soaked up by the toasty consistency of the bun so you’re not left with soggy bread during your meal! If you’re looking for a clean tasting charred burger that’s just the right amount of toastiness, juiciness, and consistency, then you have to make your way to The Paramount.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Tenoch Mexican Instagram: tenochmexican Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>Tenoch Mexican wasn’t in the original food list before I left for Boston, but something I’ve added to this list during the trip. Initially, I was pretty excited to eat some Mexican food and after checking the reviews I thought it would be a great place to break away from the seafood and American food I’ve been eating beforehand. Located on the outskirts of Little Italy, I’d say that Tenoch Mexican isn’t bad, however it’s not exceptional either. This place serves up your standard Mexican food such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and the like. If it’s something Boston doesn’t shine in (and has a lot of in general), is Mexican food. Nonetheless, I’d still recommend Tenoch Mexican as a good place to eat if you’re looking for a break from seafood/American food. I would make a stronger recommendation for this restaurant if they had a wider selection of meats to choose from. The meats they currently advertise on their menu range from the usual chicken, pork, beef, chorizo, and fish. If they served meats such as lengua, tripas, buche, and shrimp, then this would be an entirely different review. Overall, pretty average and straightforward.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Theo’s Cozy Corner Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>Theo’s Cozy Corner was never in the original food location list - and what a sin it was to not give this place the attention it deserves. My brother and I found this place one night when looking for a breakfast place to eat the next morning. If you’re making a list of where to eat within the North End area, then I must stress how it’s an absolute necessity to go here. Although it’s a cash only business, there’s a couple stores on the same street as Theo’s with ATMs. It’s also a very small restaurant where you will be elbow to elbow with diners so be mindful of how stuff is on your person coming in. What’s pretty cool about Theo’s Cozy Corner is how it serves three different styles of food: American, Italian, and Brazilian food. I didn’t go here not only once, but twice - with the sequel being even more amazing as my first time here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts</image:title>
<image:caption>The first time around I ordered the eggs benedict with the porto wine french toast. The eggs benedict was pretty solid - runny eggs, generous serving of hollandaise sauce, and plenty of home fries to go around. The porto wine french toast after the eggs benedict was simply otherworldly. The presentation itself looked like something straight out of a Cirque du Soleil performance. Mounds of whipped cream, strawberries galore, and showered in sprinkles, the placement of everything was a feast for the eyes alone. Although the porto wine is subtle in taste in the initial bite, its flavor profile becomes more apparent as the slice of toast melted in my mouth. If I had to describe the porto wine french toast in one word, I’d say it’s “art”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts</image:title>
<image:caption>The second time I went back to Theo’s Cozy Corner was before doing some street photography in Little Italy. This time I tried the Brazilian steak and eggs with grilled onions. The Brazilian breakfast is a hefty meal that includes two steak flanks, two eggs, a mound of white rice, and a cup of beans. If the porto wine french toast is art then the steak and eggs with grilled onions is a DaVinci masterpiece. Topped off with Theo’s orange sauce, the tanginess and kick of the sauce elevates the combined flavors of the dish to another level. The only drawback to this place besides being a cash only business and small space is wait times can be long due to the restaurant’s popularity. Nonetheless, my personal favorite restaurant and highest recommendation from this list goes to the one and only Theo’s Cozy Corner.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Uni Instagram: @uni_boston Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>High-end dining simply isn’t my cup of tea, however Uni is a pretty good high-end Japanese restaurant to eat at. Portions are pretty small, so I’d recommend ordering either four or five dishes for one person. Although each dish is small in quantity, each individual dish is packed with complex and distinct flavors that excite the palate. From the menu, I highly recommend ordering the choereg bread, hokkaido uni spoon, and aburi toro (fatty tuna). Keep in mind there’s a dress code where diners are expected to dress in smart, casual clothing. Another way to put it would be to dress up like you work in tech or in finance and you’ll be set. The nice part about dining here too is the staff is pretty friendly and mindful about checking in with their guests. Another added bonus would be there’s a separate room where the reservationist can store your bags while you eat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Food Crawl Through Boston, Massachusetts - Union Oyster House Instagram: @unionoysterhouse Yelp page</image:title>
<image:caption>The first restaurant from my original list and the last one on this final list, the Union Oyster House was the first stop once my brother and I hopped off the plane. The Union Oyster House is both the oldest restaurant not only in Boston, but in the country - first opening up its doors back in 1826. I had pretty high expectations of this place coming in. Although the lobster and breaded mac and cheese and the oysters were pretty good, I have to admit there’s other restaurants I think we're better later on during my trip. Although I believe the food to be just above average, I find this place to have the most character and history embedded within the walls and the floors relative to all the other places I ate at. For nearly two centuries (and even a pandemic!), countless visitors and well known figures have dined within these halls - making this place one of the most distinct dining experiences in the country. My consensus, as good as the food is, the history is what you need to come for.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Walk Among Redwood Giants - Within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, we settled visiting the Karl Knapp and the Lady Bird Johnson trails. Both trails are very easy traverse as there aren’t any steep inclines. The Karl Knapp trailhead can be accessed through the Prairie Creek Visitor Center. Although parking by the visitor center is limited to the main highway, there are plenty of spaces to occupy on both sides. As we wandered through the Karl Knapp Trail heading to the Big Tree Wayside we were surrounded by an abundance of ferns on each side of the trail. As cool as the scenery was, I couldn’t help but think that we were in some Alien movie - imaging the ferns would attack us to recreate clones to continue their survival on Earth. Maybe I was looking too much into it, but to simplify things, the place felt quite surreal.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Walk Among Redwood Giants - *Bonus* Something to look out for while hiking are banana slugs! Just on the Karl Knapp Trail alone, I was able to count 17 banana slugs. Usually they like to hang around in redwoods and in cool, damp climates. As someone who attended college in the redwoods in Santa Cruz, I can confidently point out the banana slugs in the north are of a darker yellow compared to the vibrant yellow banana slugs just south of Highway 17.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Walk Among Redwood Giants - Another hike worth visiting is the Lady Bird Johnson Trail. Between this trail and the Karl Knapp Trail, I have to say this would be my favorite between the two. The dense fog, deep, desaturated colored foliage, and stillness of the woods felt like standing in Pandora from James Cameron’s Avatar series. The lack of human presence and the quietness of nature combine for the perfect disconnection from the typical hustle and bustle from city life. The ground is much wetter and the temperature is colder relative to the Karl Knapp trail. Be mindful of bringing some quality hiking boots that can get down and dirty in tandem with a quality water resistant jacket to repel the mist.</image:title>

Although the anti-air and radar facilities are out of commission, the remnants of what once was still remains. <image:title>Blog - A Walk Among Redwood Giants - Location #2: Trojan Point on Mt. Tamalpais, or Mt. Tam for short, is a definite must if you intend to travel northbound via Highway 1. Mt. Tam is just a hop, skip, and a 30 minute drive without traffic from Hawk Hill. Luckily, Oliver and I had the whole point to ourselves and with zero fog! Did I forget to mention how awesome it is to fly a drone here while recording a hyperlapse of the clouds rolling in? It’s pretty darn cool and worth spending some time here. Although the climb to the tree as shown in this picture is steeper than it seems, the views from atop a mountain are simply breathtaking.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Walk Among Redwood Giants - Location #3: Avenue of the Giants is a 32 mile drive with parts of the passage running parallel and weaving through Highway 101. In my opinion, driving down and starting from Pepperwood is the move. Relative to the rest of the windy drive, the Pepperwood point is the straightest passage and can make for some spectacular drone footage and photogenic shots. If you have a drone, try timing yourself on how fast you can barrel down the tunnel of redwoods. On the other hand, take to the skies and be one with the redwood giants. Be cautious of the stray branches during ascension as some drones, like the DJI Mini 3, do not have built in sensors to detect incoming surroundings.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Spending Half A Day In Yosemite National Park - Before You Go: One of the best tools you can use to help plan out your trip would be the Yosemite National Park site in addition to Google Maps. During May and June Highway 120, which connects directly to the valley, may be closed due to the snow melting from the winter season. Something else to consider that I didn’t realize until I arrived in the park was the amount of closures to certain areas within the valley. Some key attractions and areas may be inaccessible due to the danger of slippery surfaces or overflow of water. Although the weather was on my side this time around, one key attraction I missed out on was the Swinging Bridge due to past season’s flooding. Although the water was quite high the time I went, it did work out to my advantage as the reflection created this beautiful landscape mirror shot of the surrounding scenery.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Spending Half A Day In Yosemite National Park - Daytime Activities: There’s a lot you can see and do within the span of 4 hours and even more to do if you have the chance to stay longer. Although I would love to stay longer, it can be quite difficult to find overnight accommodations in and around Yosemite during the summer time. It would be best to reserve accommodations months in advance as early summer is prime time for students finishing school and families taking time off to travel. <image:caption>If you’re coming in from route 140, then you’re guaranteed to at least see 4 waterfalls by looping around the Merced River. You should be able to see Bridalveil Fall, Lower Yosemite Fall, and Horsetail Fall from the road without getting out of your car. The only waterfall that requires you to get out of your car would be the Staircase Fall from Curry Village. <image:caption>Passing by Curry Village is an excellent rest stop as there’s a couple places to eat within this lodging area in addition to shops selling outdoor apparel and gear. Before hitting the road again, make sure to spot Half Dome peeking through the trees on the northside of the village. <image:title>Blog - Spending Half A Day In Yosemite National Park - Continuing along the loop on the top side of Merced River, a few key spots I’d highly recommend checking out include Yosemite Village, Yosemite Falls, and the El Capitan Meadow. I think driving from Yosemite Village back to the highway 140 entrance is a prettier drive than heading westward of the Merced River. There’s lots of outlets along the road to allow cars to pass on this one way road, but some of these outlets can provide some spectacular views. One of my most favorite views along the top side of the river is the El Capitan Meadow. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds or have a meal someplace in the valley, I’d highly suggest doing it here. The vibrant green grass, open blue skies, and minimal travelers make this spot one of the most ideal places to kick back and relax.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Spending Half A Day In Yosemite National Park - Things To Consider Next Time: Yosemite National Park has so much to offer in terms of views and activities. As a first time run in the valley, I’m quite satisfied with how my trip turned out. If I could go back in time and visit Yosemite Valley for the first time with the knowledge I have now, I would have tweaked the itinerary differently. For starters, I park my car in a lot and instead make the loop around the valley via bike. Navigating through traffic once you’re in the valley can be difficult as there are lots of one-way roads in addition to crowds of pedestrians in the village areas. I’d say being nimble when on the road is the name of the game when exploring the valley. Thankfully, Yosemite Valley is super bike friendly as most motorists don’t tend to speed on the roads. Don’t worry if you don’t own a bike or don’t want to transport a bike to the valley. There’s options to rent bikes inside the valley itself - you can find more information about the park’s policies and bike rentals on the NPS website. In terms of weather, I was super lucky with how the conditions turned out. Like I mentioned earlier, I wish I had a meal prepared or a lounge chair on hand when I visited the El Capitan Meadow. On top of that, I should’ve worn better hiking shoes that are waterproof. The meadow itself was still marshy so I couldn’t trek too far without mud or water seeping into my shoes.</image:title>
